If you want to really delve into the meat of the arguments regarding women in the church, here is the video for you.
Philip B. Payne goes through the twelve major points advanced by complementarians in “How Complementarian is the Bible?” He systematically discusses each point and the significant problems with them.
Please note that Payne believes in the inerrancy of the Scriptures as well.
The points he addresses are:
1. Male headship
2. Wives submit to your husbands
3. Women may not teach
4. Man’s priority in the creation order
5. Woman is man’s helper
6. God decreed, “He will rule over you”
7. In the Old Testament, only males exemplify leadership
8. Only males were priests
9. Only males were apostles
10. Only males were overseers, pastors or elders
11. Women should not speak in church
12. Men and women have separate roles in the church
Thanks so much for this, Sally.
I’ve just started writing an article where I make an attempt to unravel the various threads that support the ideology known as complementarianism. I haven’t had time to listen to the whole thing but it sounds as though Philip Payne’s speech will be an excellent resource for this upcoming article.
Marg,
You are very welcome! I’m hoping to start posting more again this week. I’ve had a couple of crazy weeks recently and blogging just went by the wayside! 🙂
