About

Introduction

I’m Sallie – a wife, homeschool mom, and happy warrior for Christ. I enjoy sharing what I’m learning and helping other Christians grow in discernment and live faithfully in confusing times.

My Journey

A love for Jesus and a deep desire to understand the Truth in God’s word have been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. After multiple life events in which people challenged my freedom in Christ, I found myself asking lots of hard questions.

I quickly discovered that thinking critically about faith isn’t always welcomed, especially if you are a woman in more conservative Christian circles.

With a B.A. in Elementary Education from the Honors College at Michigan State University, I taught in private, Christian, Classical Christian, and charter schools. Those years deepened my desire to see children and adults think biblically and discern wisely.

I also spent a few years on staff with InterVarsity Christian Fellowship. My time was focused on reaching out to sorority women with the Gospel. I realized while doing ministry that I truly enjoy the opportunity to encourage, mentor, and equip fellow believers.

Writing became a natural outflow of that calling. Over the years, my articles have appeared in print and online, including in The Grand Rapids Press, Christian Home and School, ParentLife, The Standard, Student Leadership Journal, The Banner, and The Old Schoolhouse, among many others. (Some works appear under my maiden name, Sallie Schaaf.)

Eventually, I thankfully ended up a happy wife, mother, homeschooler, and blogger.

About This Website

Many Christians sense something is not quite right in today’s church culture. Here at Thinking About Theology, I address the topics others often avoid. I especially desire to encourage women to stand boldly upon God’s word.

You’ll find articles and resources in areas like:

  • A Woman’s Freedom in Christ
  • Church Life
  • Compromise & False Teaching
  • Marriage
  • Culture
  • Eschatology
  • Leaving Calvinism

I am too conservative for some, ask too many questions for others, and aim to challenge unhealthy beliefs and systems wherever I find them.

A Bit More About Me

I’ve been married to David for 29 years and we homeschool our daughter, Caroline. Home, family, and faith are at the center of my life, shaping all I think and write.

My main website is at A Quiet Simple Life | Sallie Borrink. I write about simple living, homeschooling, gracious Christian parenting, gifted/2e children, unit studies, picture books, recipes, and more. I also sell fun and unique learning materials in My Shop.

Let’s Connect

Welcome! I hope you find what I do here helpful, especially if you feel alone while wrestling with hard questions. I know what that’s like.

If you desire honest reflection, deeper thinking, and biblical encouragement, I hope you’ll feel right at home here.

“Now the Bereans were more noble-minded than the Thessalonians, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if these teachings were true.” Acts 17:11

Sallie Schaaf Borrink

I’m a Christian, wife, homeschool mom, battle-seasoned blogger, and happy warrior for Christ. I discuss how Christians who don’t fit dominant institutional church and cultural narratives are already living truthfully and faithfully in the body of Christ.

A Christian Nation

"The real object of the first amendment was not to countenance, much less to advance, Mahometanism, or Judaism, or infidelity, by prostrating Christianity; but to exclude all rivalry among christian sects, and to prevent any national ecclesiastical establishment, which should give to a hierarchy the exclusive patronage of the national government."

Joseph Story (Associate Justice of the Supreme Court), Commentaries on the Constitution of the United States (1833), § 1871.

countenance: To favor; to encourage by opinion or words; To encourage; to appear in defense (Websters Dictionary 1828)
